HISTORY
Lawn tennis is also known, as ‘court tennis’, which is a sport that originated in England around the 19th century and is now played in a host of countries around the world. Historians hold a belief that the most of tennis terms derived from the French vocabulary. In fact, the word ‘tennis’ comes from the word ‘tenez’ (‘tenir’ means to hold/ catch in French). When tennis players were going to hit a serve, they would scream out ‘tenez’. There are major events of tennis throughout the world are Wimbledon, US Open, French and Australian Open tournaments.


DETAILS
Tennis is an outdoor sport played on a rectangular ground court has equal portions separated by a net placed at it’s width in the middle. In this game two or four players hit a ball back and forth within the margins of the court using their rackets. The format of the game is Singles, Doubles or Mixed Doubles.
Tennis is governed by the worldwide organization International Tennis Federation (ITF). This was founded in 1913 with name International Lawn Tennis Federation (ILTF), which was renamed as International Tennis Federation (ITF) in 1977. Tennis has been an Olympic sport since 1984.


EQUIPMENTS
A court can be played on surfaces like grass, clay, hard surface and carpet. Each tournament will choose one surface type and stick to it throughout the event.

    Rectangular court which is having surface including grass, clay, hard surface or carpet

    Court Width: 27 feet for Singles & 36 feet for doubles

  • Racket
    Laminated wooden racket with string on head / frame

  • Ball
    Spherical and hollow rubber ball having color of white or yellow
    Weight: 56 grams to 59 grams
    Diameter: 2.5 inches to 2.7 inches


BASIC RULES
  • A player loses a point if they fail to return the ball in either the correct areas on the court, hits the net and doesn’t go into opponent’s area or fails to return the ball before it bounces twice in their half
  • Score points are as 15 (1 point), 30 (2 points), 40 (3 points) and 4th would result in the winning point and the end of that game
  • If the score went 40-40 then would be known as deuce and then player must win by two consecutive points to win that game
  • To win the set a player must win 6 games as in above format
  • Most common sets as best of 3 for women’s & best of 5 for men’s matches
  • The balls in a tennis match are changed for new ball of every 6 games
